| |
Post Date: 16 Aug '07 |
| |
The African Commission on Human and Peoples' Rights issued this ''Advisory Opinion'' to African heads of state on the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. The Advisory Opinion directly addresses the concerns raised by the African Group at the UN in November 2006 and the January 2007 African Union meeting. The ACHPR affirmed that there is no contradiction between the Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples and the African Charter. Aide Memoire |
| |
Post Date: 7 May '07 |
| |
After the Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP) was submitted in June 2006 to the UN General Assembly in New York for final adoption, the Republic of Namibia tabled this ‘aide memoire’ to the Africa Group (the African caucus of diplomats). It suggests that the adoption of the Declaration would be unconstitutional in Africa and would cause a great deal of ethnic conflict and the risk of secession. The Africa Group of states in the General Assembly voted in solidarity, with the support of the Caribbean states, to delay adoption of the Declaration until further consultations had taken place within the 2007 session of the General Assembly. See the news article UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples delayed by the Africa Group for more information on the status of the Declaration. |
